Cat In Tune With Owner
 |
Charles Bennett, 72, rarely knows when he will have an emphysema attack and will be gasping for air, but his cat knows. Known as Blackie, the cat instinctively knows when his owner will begin an attack and will awaken the Albany, Oregon man.
Bennett is convinced that his pet has a sixth sense and knows ahead of time when he will awaken and begin to gasp for air. “I’ve tested this with him and so I know it’s true,” says the retired engineering consultant. “It happens too often to be a coincidence.”

During the first few days before Blackie began awakening him, he use to wake up at night gasping for breath. Bennett believes that the cat was developing an understanding of what was occurring while he was sleeping.
The first time Blackie showed his skill was around 3:00 am. After the cat licked his forehead, Bennett thought he needed to go outside. As he sat up, the cat bumped his head into his arm. Then Blackie put his teeth on his hand. As Bennett reached for his inhaler, the cat curled back up on the bed and fell back asleep.
Since then, Bennett says that he no longer wakes up gasping for breath. Instead, he normally wakes up to Blackie licking his forehead. “I don’t know if he’s helped save my life or not, but he’s saved me from some full-blown breathing attacks.” Bennett says. “I’m now getting more sleep than ever because it takes an hour to get back to sleep after an attack.”
Roommate, Philippa Meehan wonders if the cat stays awake all night to watch over his owner. “Maybe that’s why the cat sleeps so much.” During the day, she says that the cat sleeps in his own bed behind the living room couch and loves classical music. He loves to join Meehan when she plays the piano. “When he wants to go outside, he stands on the piano stool and jabs at the keys with his front paws.” “He’s in tune with Chuck,” she says.
