California Spangled Cat
The California Spangled Cat is a large, well-muscled cat with a long body and a
low-slung gait. This “engineered” breed was carefully developed to have a wild
look. The Spangle’s face is expressive and intelligent. It has a broad and
well-developed muzzle and contoured and sculpted cheekbones. The eyes are
almond-shaped with a gentle slope. The ears are medium-sized, rounded and set
well back from the fact. The tail is blunt with a dark tip. The spotted tabby’s
coat is shorthaired, with longer hair found on the underbelly and tail.

Temperament

The Spangled Cat is affectionate, curious, social and totally devoted to their
humans. This lively and energetic breed loves nothing more than interactive
play with their family members. Spangles should not be considered a “trophy
cat.” It is a cat you will want to make a treasured and active part of the
family. You will be rewarded with years of unfailing devotion.

Origin
|
The idea for this breed came from writer-director Paul Casey after his visit to
Africa in 1971. Casey was saddened by the plight of the dwindling numbers of
wild cats in Africa. He decided to create a breed of domestic cat with the look
of a wild cat that would deter people from wearing furs that resembled their
own pets. He crossed the Siamese, British Shorthairs, American Shorthairs,
Manx, Abyssinians and a line of Egyptian and Asian street cats. His breeding
program took eleven generations before the breed type was successful and was
formally introduced in 1986. The breed is currently registered with both the
ACA and the TICA. The Spangled Cat is one of the rarest of cat breeds.
Nevertheless, the Spangled has a small but dedicated following of people who
love the breed's active personality and exotic looks.
