Black and Tan Coonhound
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a raccoon and possum specialist. This large and powerful
breed is nearly completely black with tan markings on the muzzle, above the eyes,
the limbs and the chest. They have well developed pendent lips and a large nose
with very large nostrils. The stop is moderate and is located midway between the
occiput and the nose. The long ears fall in folds along the side of the head. The
topline is fairly level. The tail is long and is carried freely. The teeth should
meet in a scissor-like bite. The eyes are round and are normally hazel to dark brown.
The chest should reach down to the elbows. They have a droop of loosely fitting
skin known as dewlap that surrounds the bottom of the head. Black and Tans can cover
a lot of ground in a short period of time because of their long rhythmic strides
and normally work with their heads down close to the ground.

Temperament
|
The breed is calm, affectionate and good with children. Though Black and Tans can
be friendly and gentle with people, they tend to be aggressive towards other strange
dogs. If left alone too much, they tend to howl. Do not let this breed off of the
leash as they may take off after a scent that holds their interest. This breed also
slobbers and drools.

Origin
|
The Black and Tan Coonhound was developed from Foxhounds and Bloodhounds. It is
a breed that is well-known for its tracking ability. Each hound has a distinctive
"bay" when it encounters a fresh trail. If a pack of Hounds are on a trail, it is
easy for hunters to know their own dogs' "bay". Once the prey is treed, their voice
tone changes and the hunters can then head toward the sound. Black and Tans are
recognized by the AKC and the UKC.
