The Canine Chronicles Directory
Skye Terrier
Skye Terriers have a soft undercoat, but the long and hard 6" outercoat is straight,
free of rippling and parts down the middle. Coat colors come in gray-blue, cream
or dove but always with black, upright ears that are also covered with hair. A small
amount of white is permitted on the chest. The muzzle is powerful, with a black
nose. The eyes are brown. The hair on the face shields and protects the eyes and
forehead. The teeth should form a scissor bite. The length of the dog should be
twice its height at the withers. The feet are similar to hares and are long and
point forward. The tail is pendant and does not curl.

Temperament
|
Skyes are polite, affectionate, courageous, bold and spunky. They tend to be a little
more serious than most terriers. This digging breed is protective, willful and needs
lots of attention. Skyes need a great deal of early socialization with people or
they will grow up to be wary of strangers. They often loathe being touched by strangers,
especially without a proper introduction, and their terrier nature may make them
answer a friendly pat with a bite. Skyes should not be left alone with small non-canine
animals as they love to chase. They can be dog-aggressive.

Origin
|
One theory suggests that shipwrecked Maltese types from the ill-fated Spanish Armada
mated with local terriers (probably Cairns) to create the breed in the 1600s. Other
breeds added their influence to create the extreme ration of length to height. Once
called the Terrier of the Western Islands, he evolved to his present form isolated
on the rocky Isle of Skye. This breed is recognized by the AKC and the UKC.
