Alpine Dachsbracke
The Alpine Dachsbracke is a short-legged, hunting dog with a strong body structure.
It has a strong muzzle with a pronounced cranial region. The well-defined furrow
in the forehead emphasizes the occiput. The nose and lips are black and the eyes
are dark brown. The strong teeth should meet in a scissor or pincer bite. The neck
is muscular and not very long. The trunk is strong and well-muscled and the rump
is barely sloping. The chest is deep and broad. The tail is set high and is thick
at the root. It has longer hair on the underside and reaches to the ground. The
short legs are straight and strong. The preferred coat color is dark deer red. A
white star on the chest is permitted.

Temperament
|
The Alpine Dachsbracke is a robust, working dog that is intelligent, friendly and
fearless. This breed is used by hunters to track wounded deer and as a scenthound
for hare and fox. They are known for their endurance, stamina, energy and are very
dedicated in following a trail. This breed is not usually kept as a household companion,
but rather as a hunter and gamekeeper dog. Because of their strong prey instincts,
they should not live in a home with cats and small animals. They may be difficult
to train and to recall as they possess exceptional scenting ability, which can take
precedence over all other senses when they are on scent.

|
This breed will do fine in an apartment but is best suited for lifestyles with a
lot of activity.

Grooming
|
The Alpine's coat is easy to care for. Brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe
when necessary. Check ears often for signs of infection and trim nails often.

Origin
|
The Alpine Dachsbracke was developed as a short-legged hound for tracking and hunting
in the high altitudes of the Alps of Austria. This breed has a normal hound body,
but with shorter legs. It was developed from Austrian hounds. They are recognized
by the UKC and the FCI.
