Basset Fauve de Bretagne
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne should have a coarse dense coat in a red/wheaten or
fawn color. The medium length head should have a well defined occiput. The ears
should be level with the eyes and pointed at the end. They should be covered with
hair that is a little darker and softer than is found on the coat. The eyes should
be dark hazel in color. The strong jaw should lie in a scissor-like bite. The neck
is short and muscular flowing into slightly sloped shoulders. The deep, wide chest
should have a level topline. The legs should be muscular and strong. The forelegs
should either be perfectly straight or slightly curved.

Temperament
|
Bassett Fauve de Bretagnes are an intelligent, friendly, energetic, and courageous
breed. They are cheerful dogs, but have a mind of their own. They are great with
children and other household pets due to their quiet and calm personalities. They
will become upset and destructive if left alone for long periods of time. They love
to be busy and involved with family activities.

This breed is healthy and hardy. There are no known diseases or ailments.

|
The Basset Bleu is good for apartment living. They are fairly active indoors and
a small yard will do.

This breed needs daily long walks, but remember that they will take off after an
interesting scent.

|
Never trim the coat, but have it professionally plucked twice a year. Check ears
often and keep toenails clipped short.

Origin
|
The Basset Fauvre de Bretagne originated from the Brittany area of France during
the 1800s. They were created by crossing the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne and low-legged
hounds from the Vendee area. They were used for small-game hunting. Bassett Fauvre
de Bretagne's are popular in Britain and are now recognized by the United Kennel
Club.
