Smooth Fox Terrier

The well-muscled and well-proportioned Smooth Fox Terrier has a white, short coat with black or brown markings. They have a narrow skull which tapers to a point. The ears sit well up on the head and fold forward in a v-shape. The eyes are fiery dark, deep-set and small and the neck is thick and muscular. The docked tail sits well on the back and is straight or slightly curved. Fox Terriers have strong jaws, well-developed teeth, physical strength and courage which gives them many weapons for attack. This breed concentrates a lot of strength in a little space.

Temperament The Fox Terrier is playful, energetic and affectionate with the family. They are very playful with children but have a tendency to bite. They do not hide their jealousy. This brave breed is scrappy, impulsive and ready to charge at all times. They will become destructive without enough exercise and attention. This is one of the most aggressive breeds and they have a tendency to pick fights with other dogs. They are not to be trusted with other pets. Although they love to play with children, they should be watched closely as they have been known to bite. Keep this breed on its lead at all times unless he is in an enclosed area. They may be too boisterous for elderly owners. They make great watchdogs, but their high-pitched bark can become annoying to neighbors. This breed needs obedience training at an early age to prevent dominance challenges, guarding objects, places and their food from owners.

Living Conditions Fox Terriers will do okay living in an apartment and do fine without a yard. They are active indoors.
Exercise This breed will exercise itself if it has a small yard. They need long and regular walks and romps in the park. Make sure they romp in a safe area and that they are on their lead if small animals are present.
Life Expectancy More than 15 years
Grooming The short coat of the Fox Terrier is easy to groom. Brush occasionally and only bathe when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
Origin The Smooth variety is the same as the Wire, except for its hard, wiry jacket. Although the rough coat was probably developed before the Smooth, the rough variety was produced from crossing the smooth Fox with broken-coated terriers. They are recognized by the AKC and the UKC.
