The American Staffordshire Terrier was develop in England and brought to the United
States in the mid-19th century to compete in the fighting pits. Breeders increased
the size and height of the British version, and ears where cropped to accentuate
the more massive head and to prevent them from being ripped off during a fight.
Though dog-fighting was outlawed in 1900, underground dog-fighting pits can still
be found around the country. The American Staffordshire Terrier is recognized by
the AKC.
