The African Grey parrot is considered to be one of the most intelligent birds in the world, and that intelligence was put to the test one evening when a fire spread through the family's home. Bob the parrot's squawking became more and more frantic until he woke up the household. The Hampshire, England family awoke as fire spread through their home. Francis and his sons, Sam and Trevor, grabbed Bob's cage and escaped the burning home.
"I use to find Bob very annoying with his growling and squawking, but not now," says Sam. "He is a legend. He saved our lives. We got out just in time." Francis says that he plans to reward the African Grey with some new toys or perhaps a bird girlfriend.
The African Grey is a medium-sized parrot from the rainforests of West and Central Africa and is considered one of the most intelligent birds. They feed primarily on nuts, fruits and leafy matter. This pet is very popular because of its ability to imitate speech.
