Ben (l) and Jade only want to be with each other. Ben traveled 10 miles in freezing weather to be reunited with her.
Some call them the canine Romeo and Juliet. But to the local Terre Haute, Indiana community, they're known as Ben and Jade. The two strays met on the streets and fell in love. Ben was a 4.5 year old mixed breed and Jade was a one-year-old German Shepherd mix. Community good Samaritans made sure that the loving pair had food and water, but when Jade became pregnant last year, the Terre Haute Humane Society caught them and took them to a shelter.
Although now in a shelter, the two were allowed to stay together. Once Jade had her puppies, she stayed in a foster home until the little puppies were old enough to be adopted out. The new mom and dad were soon reunited at the shelter until a couple decided that they wanted to adopt Ben.
Courtney and Jason Lawler took Ben to their home about 10 miles away from the shelter. After about three weeks, he ran away to find his beloved Jade. The canine traveled 10 miles in freezing cold temperatures to be reunited with his love.
The staff at the shelter managed to catch the elusive Ben and he was finally able to rejoin Jade. When they saw each other, they were overjoyed. When the Lawlers learned what Ben had done they knew that Jade had to come and join their family too. "He'd keep getting loose if we took him and not her," explained Courtney.
Ben and Jade "want to be together" said Debbie Floyd, president of the Humane Society board. "There hasn't been a lot of human love in their lives. They found love with each other and that's what makes them happy…Hopefully, they will live their lives happily ever after."
