6-month-old Bentley and his older sister, one and a half-year-old Hunter, are typically inseparable, especially when they're let out to play. So it was surprising to their owners, Tim and Lisa Cassidy, when Bentley started barking and running back and forth between their house and a pond in the backyard one morning.
Most of the time, Hunter is the one to take care of her younger sister Bentley, but their roles were reversed that Friday morning at their Allegan, Michigan home.
Tim began his typical morning by waking up and letting the dogs out to play. Not long after, Tim spotted Bentley running back and forth from the pond to Tim's office window. Bentley's behavior and loud barking concerned him as Hunter was nowhere to be seen.
"Bentley was running back and forth in the yard by herself which was odd because they are always chasing each other. I didn't see Hunter anywhere," said Tim.
Tim headed outside and followed Bentley down to the partially-frozen pond, stopping just as the edge of the ice. That's when he spotted Hunter's nose sticking out from the water. She had fallen through the ice and was struggling to stay above the water.
Tim rushed to drag a canoe across the yard. Once at the water, he got it out to the middle of the pond, pulling Hunter out just in time.
"Hunter had just about had it. She had been out there for I don't know how long but she was out of gas," said Tim.
Tim quickly got Hunter back inside where he and Lisa wrapped her in blanket and even used a blow dryer to try and get her warm and dry as fast as possible.
Lisa Cassidy credits saving Hunter to her sister Bentley, saying, "Animals tell you something. I'm glad Tim paid attention."
