Buddy and Jacob Martin.(WJW)
When a fire broke out on the property next door to him, Jacob Martin was fast asleep and completely unaware of the blaze headed towards his own house. The reason he's still alive today? His recently rescued pup named Buddy.
Early in the morning on a Sunday, Jacob was fast asleep in his Mansfield, Ohio home when the house next door to him caught fire. The burning property was in the process of being restored by Jacob and thankfully vacant. Unfortunately, the fire was growing and a sleeping Jacob was completely unaware that his home was beginning to be affected by the heat.
That's when Jacob's dog, Buddy, a Pit Bull mix that had been rescued from an abandoned home only weeks earlier, sprang in to action.
Buddy began barking repeatedly to try and wake Jacob. When Jacob finally woke up, the heat and glow caused by the fire next door immediately made him realize that he had to get out of the house.
"The heat melted the door, I actually burnt my hand trying to open the door," said Jacob.
While man and dog both managed to escape the blaze, Jacob unfortunately had no insurance on the property he'd already spent $1,500 on in renovations. But Jacob added that he was just glad to be alive, all thanks to his pup, Buddy.
"Buddy is the best dog I ever had," Jacob said. "Great dog and good company."
