Braque D'Auvergne
The Auvergne is a big, tough hunting dog built for the Auvergne mountainous areas.
The head is long, in proportion to the size of the dog. The stop is moderate but
defined. The muzzle is the same length as the skull. The upper lips overlap the
lower, forming a square end to the muzzle. The teeth meet in either a scissors or
level bite. The eyes are fairly large and set rather deep. They are oval in shape
and are dark hazel with no apparent white showing. The black and shiny nose is large
and broad with well opened nostrils. The neck is long and is slightly arched with
a slight dewlap. The chest is deep rather than wide. The oval feet have deep, hard
pads and tightly knit toes. The tail is strong at the base, set high and is carried
horizontally. If docked, it should be 6 to 8 inches. If natural, it should reach
to the hock joint but not further. The unique coat of this breed is short and shiny.
The head and ears are preferably black with a white blaze. The coat can be white
with black spots, but the roaning is much preferred. The heavy roaning is called
charbonnee (charcoaled).
