Sloughi
The Sloughi (also known as the Arabian Greyhound) is a medium-sized Sighthound.
They have a smooth coat and long-legged body that shows a defined bony structure
as well as lean muscle. They are feather light when in motion. The Sloughi has a
long, wedge-shaped head with a black nose and large, dark eyes. The ears are set
high and drop close to the head. The neck is long and is slightly arched at the
chest. The forelegs are straight and bony while the hindquarters are lean, flat
and muscular. The tail is long, thin and is carried low. There should be no feathering
on this breed. Coat colors are all shades of light sand to mahogany red fawn with
or without black markings. Though they are considered sighthounds, they also have
an excellent sense of hearing and excel in tracking.

Temperament

The Sloughi is gentle and intelligent. They have a strong hunting instinct and should
be kept away from small animals. They are devoted to their family but wary of strangers.
They get along well with other dogs. Though calm in the home, the Sloughi loves
to run. This sensitive breed will react if provoked. The Sloughi is faithful, easy
to train and loves to be with their family. This alert breed makes a good watchdog.

Health Problems
|
The Sloughi is mostly hardy but some in the breed are prone to sensitivity to anesthesia,
heart murmurs and PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy).

Living Conditions
|
This breed needs a large yard to run and roam in as well as a high fence to keep
them contained. They need a person who has plenty of time for them. Apartments are
not the best environment for this breed.

Exercise
|
The Sloughi requires a lot of exercise. A minimum of two hours of exercise is needed.
They have great stamina and can run and run for long periods of time. They make
excellent jogging, bicycling or playing companions.

Grooming
|
The coat of this breed is easy to groom. They only need to be brushed every now
and then to remove dead hairs. They are cat-like and will groom themselves if their
owner does not keep them clean. Check the ears and teeth periodically and trim the
nails when needed.

Origin
|
The Sloughi and the Saluki have parallel history and most likely date back to the
same stem in the ancient Middle East. They have been known as the Arab Gazelle Hound,
Arabia Hound, Eastern Greyhound and the Arabian Greyhound. This breed was especially
prized by the Arabs for their ability to keep up with horses and to hunt gazelle
with the help of a falcon. The Sloughi have been found throughout Morocco, Tunisia,
Algeria and Libya. They were thought to have accompanied Hannibal as he was making
his way across the continent. The first Sloughi was brought to the US in 1973. They
were recognized by the UKC in 1995 have been accepted for recording in the AKC Foundation
Stock Service®.
