Dogs Need to Go to School Too
When school is back in session, everybody at home adjusts to new schedules and responsibilities. Even your dog needs to adjust to the changes, with kids now gone for much of the day and play time preempted to prioritize homework. Dogs familiar with these shifts throughout the seasons may adapt more quickly than others, but regardless of the time of year, if your dog misbehaves for any reason they may need schooling as well.
Some dog owners may balk at obedience training for different reasons. Either it’s not convenient to attend classes, it’s viewed more as something for show dogs, or owners may feel their dog is too old to be trained. In truth, dogs of all ages can benefit from basic and advanced skills taught by professional trainers, and one doesn’t need to compete for trophies to take classes.
Obedience training helps to correct unruly behavior in dogs and allow you to better manage their care. People bring pets to obedience classes for a variety of purposes:
-
To teach a dog basic commands (sit, heel, stay, etc.)
-
To curb a dog’s incessant barking and/or howling
-
To improve socialization with people and other dogs
-
To eliminate risk of biting and other destructive behaviors in public and at home
If you have experienced issues with your dog - if they don’t acknowledge commands or are difficult during walks and other activities - obedience classes can help condition your dog to act properly. It’s important to find the right trainer for your pet’s needs:
-
Talk to friends and family who have enrolled their dogs in classes. Get recommendations from trusted sources (like your veterinarian) and research.
-
Look for trainers who are certified with professional training organizations.
-
Ask to sit in on an obedience class to get a feel for what you and your dog will experience.
