Tips for Holiday Trips with Man’s Best Friend
Thinking about taking Fido along on this year's holiday vacation? Well, you’re in good company. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that over two million pets and other live animals travel by air every year in the United States. During the winter holidays, it may seem like all of them are out and about at the same time! Therefore, it’s important to see to the comfort and safety of your dog if you intend to bring him along to visit friends and relatives this year.
However you plan your trip, there are a few things for you to keep in mind before taking your pal along for the ride.
Plan ahead
Find out if your dog’s personality is suited to travel. Start with a short road trip to accustom your pet to its kennel (see our current inventory of crates and kennels for dogs if you need one). If Fido turns into a frantic furball after only a 20-minute ride to a nearby park, a longer trip could be out of the question. You might not want to give up after your initial try, though. The first trip is often the toughest, especially if you are using a pet carrier for the first time. Make sure your pet’s kennel is clean and comfortable, and choose a fun destination to help your pet warm up to travel.
It’s also important to not wait until the last minute to get your dog on board with the idea. Some states require your pet’s health to be certified by a USDA accredited veterinarian within 30 days of travel. Give yourself time for appointments and any waiting periods. Find out if your dog needs a certificate, by checking with your destination’s state veterinarian’s office.
Travel safe and smart
Keep your travel partner healthy, happy, and safe. Traveling by car? Include stops for exercise. Have a comfortable blanket handy, and don’t forget cleaning supplies. Consider placing ice cubes in a water tray, to provide small amounts of water without spilling. Another human companion can be helpful, too, for additional care and attention.
Traveling by plane? A direct flight is best. Whenever possible, travel on the same flight as your pet. Fido and his carrier should be well-labeled. A temporary tag with your destination address can save a great deal of heartache, should your pet become separated in an unfamiliar area. You should also bring along any required medication, and it’s a good idea to gather contact information for veterinarians that are local to your destination, prior to your trip.
It’s Fido’s vacation, too
Remember to bring the dog toys. A few familiar favorites can be comforting. Add a few new ones as rewards for when you reach your destination. Be sure to plan time for companionship while you are there. Vacationing with a pet is a great chance to bond and make new memories, and a few short trips can also help prepare for return travel.
