Though we continue to offer appointment-only dog grooming services at our four pet resort locations in Hampton Roads and Moyock, we understand that not every regular client can bring in their pets at this time. When you are able to leave home, our groomers will be here, ready to ensure your dogs look their best. In the meantime, home grooming allows you the opportunity to bond with your pets and keep them clean, healthy and happy.
Regular grooming does more than leave your dog smelling fresh and looking dog show sharp. The care you take can help reduce skin irritations and flea and tick infections, as well as help you detect problems with paws, teeth and other parts before they pose serious health risks. Grooming doesn’t have to be expensive, either. Care-A-Lot Pet Supply offers a great selection of pet grooming products to have on hand when you’re unable to make a salon appointment.
During an extended home stay, it’s important to groom your dog regularly. Be mindful of these points:
Make it a routine. It’s recommended to brush your dog every few days. Decide on a specific time for this, and create a routine to which your dog will adapt. Find a good spot at home, have a treat or two on hand, and be gentle with your dog when you brush.
Use pet shampoo. Dogs typically receive a bath every 2-3 months, or when necessary, so your pup may be due. We understand it’s not always easy to get the specific products you need for one right now. When it comes to cleaning your dog, however, a substitute for pet shampoo won’t work. Dog shampoos are specially formulated for pet hair to help coats shine. The shampoos we use are fine for our hair, but may contain ingredients that can irritate your pet.
Care-A-Lot Pet Supply has a great selection of pet shampoos for delivery or curbside pickup.
Watch those nails. Have your dog’s nails grown too long? Many pet owners prefer to leave the trimming to the vet or groomer, but if nail care is needed at home you don’t have to stress over it. Find a trimmer suitable for your dog’s paws (shop our selection of nail grooming products, including styptic powder for remedy) and follow the instructions so you don’t cut the quick. If your dog isn’t accustomed to home nail care, you may need some time to familiarize yourself with your pet’s paws and to calm them while you work.
