Dogs and Hot Cars Do Not Mix
As the weather in Hampton Roads warms up, we’ll turn on the news to see stories on a common yet distressing topic for this time of year: pets in cars. Every year, it’s estimated that hundreds of pets left in closed cars die of dehydration, exposure to extreme heat, and related maladies. Should a dog or cat survive a prolonged stay in a hot car and live, however, they may suffer irreversible health problems. It’s tragic, yet completely preventable.
If there is one method of averting a pet’s death or permanent injury from a stay in a hot car, it’s to leave them at home. A dog can experience heat of up to 90 degrees in a closed car on a pleasant, 70-degree day, even left alone for a few minutes during a quick trip to the store. When the temperature outside rises, your car may feel like an oven to a poor pet unable to open the car for relief. Cracking a window to let in air and/or leaving behind a bowl of water are not solutions, either. If you must run an errand or make an appointment and there’s no reason for your pet to ride along, they are much safer at home.
However, when you find yourself in a situation where your pet can’t stay at home but can’t accompany you during appointments, what then? Your pet’s safety is important, and rather than risk their health you should explore alternatives available to you.
Find a sitter. Can a trusted friend, relative, or neighbor take in your pet while you’re away? Is there a nearby kennel able to look after your dog or cat for an afternoon? Connect with people you know and who know your pet and would be willing to help.
Call ahead. Many businesses have become pet-friendly in recent times, and may accommodate your pet if you bring them along. Call ahead before going out to your appointment and explain your situation. You may be surprised to learn they will welcome your dog and provide a place for them.
Reschedule. Sometimes the best solution is staying home altogether. If you wouldn’t willingly put your pet in a sauna, you wouldn’t leave them in a hot car to suffer. If you’re unable to leave your pets home alone or find a place for them, your appointments may have to wait until you can.
