Tips for Pet Dental Month
Did you know February is National Pet Dental Month? We did, and that’s why at Care-A-Lot Pet Supply we always offer the best pet supplies for oral care. Like humans, cats and dogs are susceptible to cavities, sore gums, and other dental problems, so it’s important to help them maintain good oral hygiene.
Time to Brush Up
Do pets need to visit a dentist? For your pet’s overall health, it’s a good idea to schedule at least an annual visit. Sources will differ on when to bring your dog or cat to an animal dentist for an initial exam and cleaning, as it largely depends on breed and disposition. Many pet owners wait until their four-footed friends reach adulthood, or until they’re about “middle age” - seven years or older. Your pet’s dentist can provide the guidance you need with regards to regular visits.
As for brushing at home, if your pet’s temperament allows you to brush their teeth daily with a toothbrush, terrific! (Need one? Check out the pet toothbrushes we have in stock.) If you have reservations about brushing - for example, it’s new to you and you worry about hurting your pet - consult with your veterinarian for the best way to intuit to your pet’s comfort and needs.
If you take your dog to a groomer, ask if any packages include toothbrushing. The Care-A-Lot Pet Resort locations in Hampton Roads offer dog toothbrushing as an additional service.
Over the Lips and Past the Gums…
If you are only able to get to your pet’s teeth a few times a week, be mindful of a few things. Pet breath is a good indicator of oral health. While it’s not the most pleasant scent, even when your pets do receive daily brushings, you should be able to tell if and when your pet requires attention.
When it’s time for a snack, keep dental treats designed to freshen breath and remove tartar on hand. While not a substitute for regular brushing, such treats provide value in that they are formulated to help with canine and feline teeth.
Lastly, watch how they eat. Look for changes in their teeth and gums, and if they have difficulty chewing. Loose teeth and redness and/or swelling are signs to make an appointment with a professional.
Nothing enlivens a day more when your pet smiles, and we want to help keep them wide, beautiful, and bright. Be sure to shop Care-A-Lot Pet Supply during National Pet Dental Month and save on the best cat and dog supplies for oral health.
