Hydrate Your Pets This Summer
If you’re feeling the heat this summer, be assured it’s the same with your pets. Your pet’s body is eighty percent water, and it’s important that they stay hydrated through the hottest month of the year to avoid health problems.
July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month. Are your pets getting enough to drink? Good hydration for dogs and cats is more than simply leaving out water. Here at Care-A-Lot Pet Supply, we offer safe and functional bowls and dispensers for your pets’ refreshment, as well as other ways to ensure their health at home and outdoors.
Avoiding Dehydration & Illness
We are told to drink a glass of water once every hour throughout the day in order to stay hydrated. The rule of thumb for pets is that they should drink about an ounce of water for every pound they weigh. Active pets may need more to maintain their energy levels; you may wish to discuss hydration with your veterinarian if you have questions.
As you observe your pets this summer, look for signs they are not getting enough to drink. These include loss of appetite and energy, dry nose and gums, vomiting and loss of skin elasticity. Bear in mind, too, that it’s best for your pets to avoid drinking from garden hoses, puddles, and from swimming pools. These sources may contain bacteria and cause water intoxication in your pets. Symptoms may include excessive salivation, bloating, and vomiting.
It’s a good idea to set out multiple water bowls at different points in and around your home, so fresh water is always available to your pets. Fountain bowls, especially, can promote better drinking habits for your dogs and cats. The movement of water keeps it fresh, and a filtered water fountain also cleans the water so your pets don’t get sick.
Your pets will stay cool and sated with the PetSafe Seaside Stainless Steel Pet Fountain and the Petmate Deluxe Fresh Flow Fountain, For cats, the Catit Flower Fountain comes with an LED night light so your nocturnal pets can easily find it.
Food and Good Hydration
Cats, in particular, get most of their hydration through food. Adding bone broth or goat’s milk to your pet’s food is a great way to ensure their hydration needs are met. In addition, either of these supplements provide other benefits. Both can improve your pet’s digestion and maintain healthy skin and coats. Both additives are also good to reduce inflammation and boost immunity.
Add a bit of flavor and hydration to your pet’s food. CARU Daily Dish broths, Stella and Chewy’s Bountiful Bone Broths, Primal Raw Goat’s Milk and The Honest Kitchen Instant Goat’s Milk give your pet’s meal a healthy boost.
Hydration on the Go
Whenever you travel with your pets, accommodate their hydration. Even if you are making a short trip to the park or store, it’s good to have fresh water on hand so your dog isn’t parched. A simple collapsible bowl or pet-friendly water bottle can make a difference in your pet’s health on a hot day.
The Kurgo Gourd Water Bottle & Bowl is great for long trips with your pet. For hiking and outdoor play, the Petrageous Collapsible Bowl is easy to use and store.
