Summer Dog Walking Safety
Walking with your dog is a wonderful way to bond with your pet and stay healthy. During this season of unpredictable weather, between days of three-digit temperatures and summer storms, it’s important to stay safe and help your dog avoid risks of injury and heat stroke.
At Care-A-Lot Pet Supply, we offer an extended selection of treats, toys, and grooming products your dogs will enjoy this season. We’re also happy to recommend select dog supplies you’ll find useful for your daily walks.
When To Walk
At the peak of summer, early mornings and late evenings bring the coolest temperatures for walking. Regardless of the time of day, we recommend a lighted collar for visibility. Nite Ize LED safety collars and lighted charms can alert cars, cyclists and other pedestrians to your presence.
Where To Walk
Hot sidewalks and roads can singe tender footpads. For lengthy walks, consider shaded areas along nature trails or a stretch of pet-friendly beach. If you drive to a park or other location for your walk, never leave your dog unattended in your car. Even with the windows lowered, a dog is susceptible to dehydration and other health risks.
After long walks, try NaturVet Tender Foot Cream to keep your dog’s footpads soft and moisturized.
What To Bring
You both need water to stay hydrated and energized. No matter the length of your walk, it’s a good idea to carry along a water bottle for breaks. The Kurgo Gourd Water Bottle and Bowl allows you and your dog to refresh when needed. A small dog bowl detaches from the bottom of the bottle; simply fill it from the spout from which you can drink.
When you come home from walking on a particularly hot day, your dog may need some extended cool down time. Prepare a kiddie pool with cold water and your dog’s favorite waterproof toys. Splashing around is a good way to clean off any dirt and sand your dog may track home as well.
